Not illustrated.1839 Excerpt: ... STADE DUTIES. Stade, a town of little importance in itself, is situated on the west bank of the river Elbe, about twenty-five miles below Hamburgh. It is now included in the hereditary dominions of the King of Hanover, to which it was annexed under the following remarkable circumstances.--In the year 1725, the duchies of Bremen and Verden, which had been lately wrested from Sweden by the King of Denmark, were ceded by that sovereign to George I., of England, as part of his Electoral dominions, in consideration of 150,000/. paid to the Court of Denmark by Great Britain. Lord Townshend and Mr. Walpolef, the ministers who conducted this treaty, looked upon the pecuniary sacrifice made by Great Britain for this extension of the Hanoverian dominions, as a, measure of sound policy--since, by securing the town of Stade in British interests--a town where the King of Sweden had, in 1691, established, by Stade is situated in the duchy of Bremen. t See Townshend papers. Coxe's Life of 'Walpole, Vol. treaty, a right of toll on the Elbe, protection would be afforded to the mercantile relations of Great Britain with Hamburgh, which even at that time were of considerable importance. It was not the aggrandizement of Hanover, therefore, but the encouragement of British commerce, which induced the cabinet of George I. to add, at the expense of this country, the town of Stade and the district around it to the German possessions of their sovereign. Let us mark how the evolutions of time confound the wisdom of statesmen! The commerce of Great Britain on the Elbe, a river which is the great highway to the markets of Germany, is now obstructed and menaced with ruin by precisely those means which the ministers of 1715 concerted for its security and extension.
